Open Letter to the US Ambassador to Belgium
Dear Ambassador White, The Brussels branch of the National Union of Journalists (UK & Ireland) is deeply concerned about accounts of the expulsion of two European Correspondent journalists from your 4 July celebration at the Cinquantenaire Park in Brussels, allegedly for asking a question you wished to avoid. Reports indicate that you compounded the offence by throwing personal insults at the individuals concerned – an unpleasantly immature mode of behaviour on the part of the United States’ highest diplomat in Belgium. We would remind you of the provisions of Chapter II, Article 11 of the European Charter of Fundamental Rights: Freedom of expression and information 1. Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. This right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers. 2. The freedom and pluralism of the media shall be respected. We would direct your attention also to the declaration of the European Council stating: Media freedom and pluralism are a vital part of democracy and of the fundamental rights of EU citizens. True democracy is not possible without a free media scrutinising those in power. The media is a key pillar in the checks and balances that underpin democratic rule. That’s why the descent into authoritarian rule often starts with independent media being targeted. Over the last few decades, a number of states across the globe have taken this path, using coercion and often violence to persecute media outlets and individual journalists. As guests in Europe, you and your diplomatic staff should respect these fundamental democratic principles and the essential role of free and independent journalism.
